MIRDcalc software use notes

  • IMPORTANT NOTES:
    • ALL USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE MIRDCALC VERSION 1.21 OR LATER, TO AVOID POTENTIAL ERORR.
      • (the latest version can always be downloaded from this website)
  • Installation:
    • If you have any trouble installing MIRDcalc, ensure all old installations (of same version) are completely uninstalled, and then run the MIRDcalc installer again.
    • To uninstall MIRDcalc, use the MIRDcalc uninstaller found at C:\MIRDsoft\MIRDcalc\MIRDcalc_v1.0\unins000.exe or navigate to control panel -> programs and features -> MIRDcalc
  • Updates on reported issues:
    • (2021-06-25) TREND MICRO ANTIVIRUS: Users of Trend Mirco antrivirus have reported issues with running software. We have been in contact with Trend Micro, and the issue appears resolved as of June 24, 2021, Trend Mirco has added our software to their whitelist.
    • (2021-06-25) GENERAL ANTI-VIRUS ISSUES: To help avoid future antivirus issues, we have recompiled the software using a code signing certificate. If you’re experiencing trouble with antivirus software, you can obtain the code signed version of our software by redownloading it; The code signed version of our software is available on our website from 2021-06-25 on. It has the exact same functionality as the previous release but includes a code signature (a standard safety measure for distributed software) and a regional settings initialization fix mentioned below. If you encounter issues with antivirus software even with the new code-signed version of the software, please let us know and we’ll will look into it.
  • (2021-25-06) MICROSOFT REGIONAL SETTTINGS FIX: Some users have reported issues where software reports crazy numbers (patient masses in the 1000’s of kilograms for example). We have identified the issue as a mismatch with Microsoft regional settings on some users computers, specifically this is caused by Windows systems that use “.” as a thousands delimiter. If you’re experiencing such troubles, please uninstall your current version and redownload the installer from the mirdsoft.org website. The June 25, 2021 compilation, and all versions going forward, have regional settings issue fixed. In addition, we have published a single case QC test that users may perform to ensure their software is working properly, see link: MIRDcalc system regional setting validation.
  • Version 1.1 – (2022-03-09)
    • INTERPOLATION BUG FIX: In a small number of interpolated phantoms, a small number of target regions (in all 13 / 924) had their S values prematurely set to zero. This occurred because the two closest phantoms being used for interpolation have the same assigned masses, per ICRP models, which was not handled by the log‐log interpolation. The issue has been fixed in version 1.1, now online.
  • Version 1.2 (2023-05-17)
    • Updated cross/self-dose definitions –
      • We reorganized some self-dose definitions of the source-target region pairs. This will have virtually no effect on the dose calculations to target regions, but it will affect which portions of the dose are categorized as self and cross dose. The updated regions include:
        • Target Bronchiolar secretory cells are now classified as self-dose from source Lungs
        • Target Colon – ICRP133 now classified as self-dose from source Colon wall – rectosigmoid
        • Target Colon – rectosigmoid now classified as self-dose from source Colon wall – rectosigmoid
    • Added a more versatile save function
      • User may now select a save location when saving files
      • Shortened default save file name
    • GUI features
      • Removed “auto full screen” behavior
      • Updated formatting of cells to make it easier for users to paste input data from text files
    • Added additional database integrity checks (background)

  • Version 1.21 (2023-07-07)
    • Some European users reported tumor dosimetry not working – this was due to an excel function we used in the code that was not working on European systems. We have fixed this issue in version 1.21.
    • Corrected database issue – in certain situations an error in loading correct masses is possible in older versions (when switching between similar phantoms). The new feature ensures smooth/correct changes of phantoms.database.
      • THIS FEATURE CORRECTS A POTENTIAL ERROR IN DOSIMETRY AND WE RECOMEND ALL USERS TO ENSURE THEY ARE USING MIRDCALC V1.21 OR LATER (users can uninstall older versions using the uninstall icon, and then download and install version 1.21 or later from this website)

Troubleshooting:

Installation error:

The error message “IPersistFile Save failed, Code 0x80070005, Access is denied” indicates that the installation process is encountering a permissions issue while attempting to save a file. To resolve this error, you can try the following steps:

  1. Make sure you are admin on the workstation.
  2. Run the installation as an administrator: Right-click on the installer file and select “Run as administrator.” This ensures that the installation process has the necessary permissions to write files to the system.
  3. Temporarily disable antivirus software: Sometimes, antivirus software can interfere with the installation process and restrict access to certain files. Try disabling your antivirus software temporarily before running the installation again.
  4. Check folder permissions: Ensure that the target installation folder and its parent directories have the appropriate write permissions. Right-click on the folder, select “Properties,” and navigate to the “Security” tab. Make sure that the user account under which you are installing has the necessary permissions to write to the folder.
  5. Use a different installation location: If the error persists, try installing the software to a different location or directory. Choose a location where you have write permissions, such as your user folder or the desktop.
  6. Check system policies: In some cases, group policies or system settings might restrict access to certain locations or prevent software installations. If you are on a managed network or using a computer provided by an organization, consult with your system administrator to ensure that there are no policy restrictions in place.
  7. Restart the computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary permission issues. Restart your computer and attempt the installation again.
